Because the debuggers (AVR Studio as well as AVaRICE) automatically program the fuse upon connecting to the ICE. Without this fuse being programmed, the JTAG ICE will only have access to flash and EEPROM page programming but nothing else. -- cheers, J"org .-.-. --... ...-- -.. .
