It might be, that permission issues with accessing the programming device as normal user are meant. First try to add "sudo" in front of the avrdude command - does this work?

I assume "ubs" actually means "usb".  Still, what does "won't
recognize" mean?  Does it tell you it has not been configured with
libusb support?

What does "how to recognize the right port" mean?  What "port"?

And, what programming hardware do you intend to use?
