Whoever came up with this solution:

I actually just had to hack my way through this problem on Saturday.. let
me guess, this is a Windows XP box that's part of a workgroup, not a
domain? If so, you'll need to disable 'Simple Sharing' to allow an
administrative user to connect to the C$ share. This is done by loading an
Explorer window, and go to Tools->Folder Options. Go to the 'View'
tab, and scroll all the way down. Uncheck the ‘Use Simple Sharing
(Recommended)’ option. I actually had problems finding this, so I ended
up posting it to my blog - post is at:

I can now backup My Documents, which I couldn't before.  Great find.
