you should also check your sudoers file for a "requiretty" option.

Later versions had this enabled and it means that to sudo you need to 
come from a valid tty.

if that is happening usually sudo logs errors into /var/log/messages.

If you have requiretty in the sudoers file, remove it and try the backup.
