Small groups of participants, working with the assistance of a tutor, meet
together in an atmosphere of joy, calm and meditative serenity to engage in
close study of the course materials. The tutor's role is that of a
facilitator of learning, and seldom that of a lecturer. The responsibility
for learning rests with the participants; they are active learners, who are
constantly thinking, analyzing, formulating ideas and answering questions.
The participants are not the recipients of knowledge bestowed by the tutor;
rather, the tutor helps the participants study the course materials and
reach certain conclusions about their content and meaning. The tutor does
not deliver answers to the participants, neither does he pretend not to know
what is to be learned from each unit of study. He guides discussions and
actively contributes to the movement of the group's understanding towards a
set of preâ€'determined objectives, but welcomes whatever additional
insights and realizations the group may reach.
