No i had not touched the controls, they were in default.
Have you tried subscribing another mail address (not under gmail) to see if that works?

There's also an option "Receive acknowledgement mail when you send mail to the list?"
That is set to to "No". Is an "acknowledgement" the same as the outgoing "Posting" ? If so then perhaps it is poor wording ... and is the issue.
