Patna, (Bihar Times): A man of Bihari origin, Prakash Narain and Doug Bailey became the new Mayor Pro Tem and Mayor, respectively of the city of Cypress, south California, the United States. The decision was taken at the council meeting on December 8, at the Cypress City Council Chambers.
Narain and Bailey will hold these positions for one-year terms that will continue until December 2009. Todd Seymore and Leroy Mills held these positions in 2008. Narain and Bailey assumed their new duties immediately. Both were elected to the Cypress City Council in November 2006 and have been very active in the community for many years. Narain said he was humbled and honoured to serve the residents of Cypress in his new role as Mayor Pro Tem for 2009. Cypress, has the population of about 50,000 and is located in Orange County. Its population is 65% Caucasian and 21% Asian. However, South Asians comprise only 0.2 per cent of the population. Reports from US say that Narain's community involvement includes serving eight years on the Cypress Senior Citizens Commission and as its chairman for three years. He became a Council Member in his first attempt at public office. Narain is a physician with a specialization in internal medicine and geriatrics. He has been in medical practice at Leisure World in Seal Beach for 21 years. While serving his four-year term as a City Council Member, he continues his medical practice and his role as Medical Director of the Leisure World Health Care Center. He is also currently Chairman of the Governing Board of Directors of Los Alamitos Medical Center in Los Alamitos. Narain grew up in Bihar where he attended Darbhanga Medical College, and immigrated to the US in 1980. He completed his medical residency in internal medicine at St. Joseph's Hospital, Chicago and his fellowship training in geriatrics at UCLA Medical Center and the VA Westwood Hospital in Los Angeles. He is also a Fellow of the American College of Physicians. Narain and his wife, Veena, have been married for 28 years and have lived in Cypress for the last 21 years.
