Sound and conservation technician: effects of oil infrastructure noise on 
prairie songbirds
University of Manitoba
Start: January 3 2012
Duration: 4 months
 
The Landscape Ecology and Conservation of Songbirds and Prairie Ecosystems 
(LCSP; www.conserveprairiebirds.org) research lab within the Natural Resources 
Institute of the University of Manitoba is seeking a sound technician to help 
conduct research on effects of oil well noise on grassland songbirds. The 
project manager will live and work out of Winnipeg between January 3 and March 
3, and out of Brooks, Alberta, for the rest of the contract. The position will 
pay approximately $3000/month.
Field work will include helping to build, test, and set up bird song and 
infrastructure recording field equipment, liaising with sound experts and sound 
engineers, designing and building sound projection equipment, data management, 
data analysis using software such as RAVEN, report preparation, etc.
 
Applicants must have a Bachelors degree in Biology or a related field. 
Preference will be given to applicants with (1) carpentry and/or electric 
wiring experience, or (2) a Masters degree in ornithology or conservation, or 
(3) experience in avian sound ecology or avian conservation, or (4) management 
of sound or electronics equipment, and who demonstrate problem solving skills 
and a strong work ethic. Applicants should submit a cover letter, CV, and

In January 2013 we expect to advertise for a second position, 4-year term,

position, either a Masters or several years of field research experience will
