There is a patch available for pinkeye in cattle that would cover the eye.
I would not suggest anymore iodine as iodine tends to kill tissue. As the
optic nerve is a direct connection to the brain, stopping infection is
needed immediately. There is going to be some dead tissue if the eye is
decaying. This will take a lot of management. If you have a vet that will
look at it, then I would take her in.. A small animal vet may be talked
into looking at her. If you tranquilize her, then she will need to be kept
sitting sternal until she comes to.. Then she will be crazy and do nto get
in her way. A quiet dark place is best for her to come out of anesthetic.
Another sheep nearby is necessary for her to calm down.
I would wash this out with saline solution, I make my own, get some
non-iodized or Kosher salt and mix 6 tablespoons to 1 gallon of distilled
water and keep it clean. it is great for washing out wounds. The salt will
kill a lot of pathogens. I would not pack the eye socket as you want this
to drain. the eye patch will protect it from crap getting into it. Leave a
corner so it can drain. Prefereably toward the front as she will still
graze or eat with her head down. You need both gram positive and negative
antibiotics. At the risk of getting flamed for this, I would give her 1.5
ml of Baytril each day along with 3cc of Pennicillin. Note I stated 1ml,
not 1cc as you will have to read the label on the Baytril, there are
different formulations.
OK for the legal stuff now...I am not a vet, and am not prescribing
anything, and do not take any responsibility for what you give your sheep.
I only am stating what I would do to take care of this animal if she was
mine. You have to attack this quickly as ther optic nerve is directly
connected to the brain and can easily be a pathway to spinal fluid
infections.
If you can let her associate in a small pen with another calm animal it
would be best. She will be very easily agitated without being able to see
on both sides. Also take care to approach her only on her good side.

Subject: [Blackbelly] Ewe poked her eye out
One of my ewes appears to have poked her eye out. There is just a red
swollen
area where her eye was.
It was clean, so we drenched the area in iodine, and covered it with a
gauze
pad, held on with duct tape.
I'll check it tomorrow.
Anything I am missing or should look for?
Tom
