Yeah, that certainly sounds like the 2D driver's fault unless you're seeing corruption only when you start running a 3D client/vi. Does it change when you toggle AccelMethod "XAA" to "EXA" or vice versa (I don't remember the default for radeon). If you're still having issues, I'd highly suggest filing a bug. Alex Deucher is very responsive on radeon bugs.
