i understand that the 2 are different pieces of software that achieve
the same thing. so what exactly is the difference here? i am guessing
that different programs use a different one of the two? if so, which one
is more popular? is it true that policykit will be deprecated soon?

i did a quick check on my kubuntu system, and noticed that both are
installed:

willy@Hamra:~$ dpkg --get-selections | grep polkit
libpolkit-agent-1-0 install
libpolkit-backend-1-0 install
libpolkit-gobject-1-0 install
libpolkit-qt-1-0 deinstall
libpolkit-qt-1-1 install
polkit-kde-1 install
willy@Hamra:~$ dpkg --get-selections | grep policykit
policykit-1 install
policykit-1-gnome install
policykit-desktop-privileges install
willy@Hamra:~$

so, i assume they can co-exist, if needed, would it be a problem for
them to share the same user "polkituser".

in all cases, whatever advice this list has, would be very welcomed.
thanks in advance.
