I got up to the third floor and I talked with this one person who says
that I've reached a dead end and that I will have to back track to find
my way to the next floor.
How should I go about getting to the next floor?

As far as I remember, global you go south west for a long while, then
find a somewhat longer path, then go up north east again, and finally
find a ladder on the north. But everything is constructed to make you
get lost and turn round. At the same time there are a lot of chests
and bonuses.
