Hi Terrie, I am thinking you are talking about the plastic sort of trap?
The ring goes on with the narrow edge down so it is the narrow edge which fits down into the opening of the 'U' shape. You then thread the nut over the threads on the 'U' and take care not to cross the threads. Usually hand tight should be enough, but a good hand tight. If it does leak a little you can buy new wedge shaped rings. You need to know the size, usually inch and a quarter but can be inch and a half or two inches. Hope I understood you correctly.
