Has the basement been sealed against moisture in the past? For the spiders and creepy crawlies, you can get a tank sprayer and bug killer at the hardware store. It's easy enough to mix and pet and child safe. Spraying should be done once a month to keep the bugs under control. If the basement is damp, you may need to seal it again before putting up drywall etc.
