My wife's friend is looking to replace her 318iC with
a recent vintage E46 convertible. She fell in love
with one she saw that was a dark blue with saddle
interior. I think she'd prefer a 325 and would like
another 5 speed. Anyway, if you know of one
available, please email me and I will forward it on to
her.

Thanks,

It's not a real M5T. It;s a replica.

Close examination reveals:

1) WBA VIN is a dead give-away that it is a replica. Real M5s have a
WBS VIN, just like M3s.

2) No such thing as a 1996 E34. The bodywork says it's a 1995 by the
wide grille and matching hood, 1995 only.

2) Engine is a 3.6l, obvious by the different head cover and spark
plug wires. All real M5Ts (1993-1995) are 3.8l with the different
head cover and no plug wires at all (they use coil packs like the
E36).

3) Wrong bodywork - front valance is an Alpina replica, and lower
trim is body colored. Real M5s have a milder valance and gray or
black lower trim. Standard E34 rear valance, not M5. Also, this
replica's fender markers are upside down.

4) Wrong seats - those are standard E34 seats, not the M5's sport
seats. All the tan leather looks like a re-do, including the doors.
Too baggy.

5) Wrong gauge cluster - real M5s have red needles, this replica has
white. Additionally, real M5s have an oil temp gauge under the
speedo, this replica has the standard MPG gauge. The replica does
have the fuel gauge in liters, which does hint at the imported nature
that the DOT/EPA release paperwork signifies.

6) Brakes look too small. The 1995 models only had the larger 345mm
front rotors.

7) Aftermarket wheels and mesh grilles could be on a real M5, but
they are not.

8) That's a standard E34 steering wheel. Real M5s have a thicker
wheel with Motorsport tri-color stitching.

9) Non-Euro headlamps could/would have been changed to DOT
equivalents.

10) Very surprising, it does appear to have PDC - Park Distance
Control (see sensors in rear bumper trim), which did exist but I have
never personally seen on any M5T. Retrofit kit was/is available from
BMW.

11) Does not appear to have leather-trimmed M5 center console.

So that's about it. It may be a nicely-done replica, but has no
value other than what it is - a basic E34 Touring with the smaller
3.6l M5 engine transplanted and some aftermarket running gear.

As the seller says it is imported and has DOT/EPA paperwork, it could
have been built overseas from a standard E34 Touring donor chassis.
Odd to go to the expense and effort of importing this car as it could
have been replicated from US components, at this point more
affordably than importing that car.

Additionally, as that motor is no newer than a US 1993, the 1995
chassis may have trouble with a visual under-hood inspection in CA if
the inspector nows his BMWs.

Depending on the quality of the installation and condition of the
mechanicals, I would not value it any higher (and possibly lower)
than a real US 3.6l M5, 1991-1993 vintage.

By the way, what Rob has a purple beastie?

I just came in from the garage..big storm here in Maine tonite.. 1:00 AM now..
I started to put the snow tires on at 9:00pm..I have a set of replacement
warranty Bilsteins sitting in the garage..I was just going to change the
tires..BUT...
Now the car is jacked and the wheels are off, and I have an impact gun in
my hand..Hmm lookie here, only three bolts to drop the strut top, three for
the bottom on my 88 735i..150 k miles on these struts...It will never be
easier than right now to pull the struts.. yeah thats the ticket, Ill just
pull em and deal with it tomorrow..well, I jammed the calipers back with a
big screwdriver, and pulled the brakets with the slider assy. still intact,
undid the swaybar link, the brake sensor wire, and the ABS senders...it was
11:00 then, maybe I'll go find my strut compressor..be ready for
tomorrow..Found it and my big sockets...Well I guess I'll just set up the
compressor on a strut..hmm i'll run it with the impact wrench..might as
well pull the insert....might as well put the new one in and put it back on
the car (untorqued)..Might as well do the other side..So I did..there she
sits with the new struts in the housings, springs on, and reinstalled..All
I need to do tomorrow is slam the calipers back on and tighten the bolts,
and put the snowtires on..maybe I'll check if I can cut the brake rotor, as
it seems to have some runout and its almost new..the old struts are packed
and ready for the Bilstien warranty evaluation.. I think I'm down to about
1-1.3 hrs. per side now..

A casual looks brings the following questions:

1. What's going on with the center grille?
2. Why isn't it a Motorsport VIN starting in WBS...?
3. Why doesn't it at least have sport seats?
4. Why can't the guy afford a decent camera?
5. What kind of air dam is that?

and, here's what the VIN Wayne claims decodes to:

Marc,

I just got through "coating" the shift lever handle and steering wheel on
my E32 with Leatherique black. It came out pretty good. I used a goodly
portion of the dulling agent to keep it from appearing shiny (I think
Eilenberger complained about this years ago). Coating it took only half an
hour. The prep and clean took a few days.

My 15 year old nephew has succumbed to the same sickness we all have --
Bimmeritis. He has gone and spent every last dime he has saved over the
years on a 1983 BMW 318i. As this is as close as he could afford to his
uncle's M3 and 330i, he is pretty content.

That said, I want to help him out. The car is tired (almost by definition,
it is a 318i after all ;-), and needs work. I'm looking for low-cost hop-up
parts (read: free or very cheap) to improve the car for him. I'll be flying
up to their home in Oregon in the new year and would love to come bearing
goodies to help him install.

Some specific things I'd love to find for him:
- Shocks/springs/bars -- do 'is' parts fit?
- Interior (his is ragged and in need of replacing)
- Wheels -- anything better than the stock 13?s
- Exhaust

So, if you have any performance parts, maintenance items, or minor upgrades
collecting dust in the garage, let me know. You'll be helping me create yet
another BMW addict to join our fold.

Any help would be appreciated.

Ok, so apparently the E28 M5 should be in F stock for solo II

except mine has a problem.

1) it has the frank fahey bulletproof crank hub. This is obviously not a
performance modification, but a "engine, pretty please dont blow up" mod.

2) it has a lightweight flywheel. this is obviously a performance mod, and
definitely looks to be disallowed for F stock.

3) it has an aftermarket cat but factory downpipes and exhaust.

So, what the heck category would that put me in ?

OK mighty minions of the automotive guild,

Why does GM put a grape scent in their 75W90 gear oil? Specifically it's a
"synthetic" gear oil that's called for in some of the truck differentials.
Unless it serves some purpose or it's an accidental artifact of the
material itself, I don't see GM wasting money to add it for no good reason.

Group,

I have a 2002 530i sport package for sale...Black on
black...Loaded...21,000 odometer miles/3,000 engine miles. Why the
discrepancy? The car was salvaged due to the fact it's motor was
stolen...

...I can just see it now...People scrambling to close and delete the
email and move on...

The car was NEVER in an accident, mangled, abused, etc. I've created a
website with dozens of pictures. Feel free to send me any questions you
may have.

You can see the car here http://www.inlacal.com/530isport
