Subject: Converting E30 power steering rack to "manual"
Message-ID: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>

Hi all,
after some deliberation I decided to try to convert
power steering rack on my 87 325is track car to
"manual" rack, however I am not sure what is the best
way to go about this (I did read some of the older
post about the subject). I do know that the rack in
question is designed for power assist and not
"manual"...I hear of people who simply drained power
steering fluid and plugged the inlet and outlet
ports and report no problems. Also I heard of people
who left fluid in the rack and made a tube that
connects inlet port (from the pump) and
outlet, i.e just bridged it.
-Leaving no fluid in the rack somehow doesn't jive
with me, so how
about the "bridge" option?
-How much fluid should be in the rack, and what type
of fluid?
-What is the worst that can happen - torsion bar
(torsion spring) can
malfunction/brake (I guess), but I am unclear of
consequences in this
situation?
-Also some have left power steering reservoir in place
(just took the pump out), however I would like to get
as much stuff out of there as possible (not just for
weight savings, but more for simplicity, easier
access, etc.)

Any other way of doing this?

(This is for track/race car and series' rules do not
permit straight swap to manual rack, however steering
pump and reservoir can be legally removed)

Regards,
Igor

     Here's how:
On the E30 I used the manual rack and steering shaft u-joint (connects
the flex disc to the steering rack) from a euro E30 316i. Mount the
manual rack at the forward two mounting tab holes instead of the
rearward two holes which the power rack mounts to.
On the E36 I've kept the power rack and connected the outlet back
to the inlet tubes because a manual rack isn't available with as quick a
ratio as the M3 has. (if I'm wrong someone please correct me). Use a 56
inch long belt to bypass the PS pump, and remove the bottom inner
mounting bolt from the ps pump bracket for belt clearance.
hth,
Barry

Thanks Barry. Did you drain (or re-fill) rack or just
left the fluid as-is in the rack before bridging inlet
and outlet ports?

Does anyond know if the 2000-03 E52 Z8 high beam bulb, p/n 63128384643 is
the same as the Toshiba 9011 HIR high beam bulb? I ask because several
people on another forum have stated, that with minor modification, it will
work in my 1990 E34 535i and can be used as either a high or low beam.

The Z8 bulb retails for $29. Anyone of any dealers that sell it at discount?
Thanks, Brewster

The Toshiba 9011 HIR bulb is easily modified to fit any holder designed for the
9005 bulb. I purchased 8 bulbs from MAXLUMENS, 4 of the 9011 and 4 of 9012 for
two of my cars and got a good discount and shipping savings...worked out to
just over 25$ each.

The 9012 replaces the 9006 with modification.

http://shnu.us/HIR%20Trimming%20Stock.htm

shows you how to do this modification. Use Nail clippers or dremel tool.

They made a world of difference in the crappy US Ellipsoids in my e30M3

Best solution (but pricey) as Stern recommends, is to get rid of
those lights and replace them with H1 Cibes. Satch has commented on
these on the iX project as well.

or, cheaper and still better than the crappy US Ellipsoids: Hella H1/
H4 setup. Susquehanna Motorsports http://www.rallylights.com/ has
these at a good price.
Then you can choose from lots of bulbs including those cool yellow
flavored models that I like to use in the high beams and fogs.

cheers!
