GSoC patches should be posted here just so students are familiar with the
process that others are using and familiarized with how to create proper
patch files.  That is a useful basic skill that extends to most open source
projects too, regardless of the version control system being used.  Using
git or other hosting services is fine for some purposes, especially your
own open source projects, but would ultimately be busy-work for GSoC since
the goal isn't to just use something you're familiar with.  Being
proficient with patch files is a basic skill and a good one to learn
proficiently.
