Same happens with cat or ":", not only find. It doesn't happen for
# su - nobody
And I've isolated the problem to somewhere in this chunk of $INPUTRC:
set history-preserve-point on
set visible-stats on
set show-all-if-ambiguous on
set meta-flag on
set convert-meta off
set input-meta on
set output-meta on
