Follow-up Comment #1, bug #23885 (project findutils):

It's not clear to me that the convenience of supporting such arguably
misconfigured systems could at all justify the performance impact of calling
getgrgid() for every visited file with a previously-unseen gid.

These systems will in any case have other usability problems.   One example
would be inconsistency between the output of "groups" and the actual ability
to access files which would at first and second glance appear to be
group-readable.
