    I suspect that you are accessing an `an-old.tmac' ver-
    sion which doesn't  include  `an-ext.tmac'  (which  in
    turn holds the definition of the `.SY' extension).

Thank  you,  Werner.  My  GNUWin32  distribution  had  several
an-old.tmac files installed on my system (in  different  loca-
tions). I just deleted the older ones and then Groff "saw" the
new and correct ones.

The location with outdated versions were:

 (1)   C:\Program Files\GnuWin32\lib\groff\site-tmac"

 (2)   C:\Program Files\GnuWin32\share\groff\site-tmac
