Summary: Unknown device type nvme0n1 when probing for hints string Project: GNU GRUB Submitter: canetonvolant Submitted: Sat 05 Nov 2022 06:46:22 AM UTC Category: None Severity: Major Priority: 5 - Normal Item Group: Hardware-specific Status: None Privacy: Public Assigned to: None Originator Name: Originator Email: Open/Closed: Open Release: 2.02 Release: Discussion Lock: Any Reproducibility: Every Time Planned Release: None _______________________________________________________ Follow-up Comments: ------------------------------------------------------- Date: Sat 05 Nov 2022 06:46:22 AM UTC By: Nathan Lane <canetonvolant> While attempting to install a dual-boot Windows 10 / Arch Linux system with a shared EFI partition on an NVME drive in a new PC, I encountered a barrier to creating a Windows entry in GRUB. I was able to run `grub-probe --target=fs_uuid /boot/EFI/Microsoft/Boot/bootmgfw.efi`, and received an output in the expected format for an fs_uuid. I have no reason to believe that fs_uuid is inaccurate. The trouble arose when I ran `ub-probe --target=hints_string /boot/EFI/Microsoft/Boot/bootmgfw.efi`. Instead of a hints string, I received the error: `grub-probe: warning: unknown device type nvme0n1.` I attempted to run the same command a couple more times, and received the same error each time. This error is also reported in this forum post from 2017. https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=230961 Operating system information: Windows 10, Arch Linux (non-Archiso) current as of an -Syu six hours ago (no version number available under rolling update system).
