Fails on both Debian 2.1 and Red Hat 6.0. I looked at ftp.gnu.org, and
the latest version of there is the same as what I was using: 2.13.

I can't make Makefile.in from Makefile.am, either. Let me guess: I
need a not-yet-released version of automake, too?

$ autoconf --version
Autoconf version 2.13
$ automake --version
automake (GNU automake) 1.4a

ObBug: If you boot using the menu and one of the commands gives an
error, the error message is not displayed. You are just told to press
a key, and you have to type in all the commands from the command line
to see what the precise error was.
