I do not think this will be dealt with in grub. grub2 is currently in
development and in grub-legacy only serious bugs are fixed. You might
want to try and fix this yourself.

That said, you should know that unlike lilo, you do not have to install
grub again after e.g. adding a kernel. You only have to edit your config
file (usually menu.lst - maybe grub.lst (or grub.conf?) in your setup),
and that's it. In the next boot grub will read the conf file and offer
the new kernel etc.
