I am maintaining an enhaced version of the Adam L...'s patch. Hi Adam!
It's on the Super Grub Disk source code (Check Source Code downloads at:
http://adrian15.raulete.net/grub/ ) on dev_grub folder.

It has the superb findf command, similar to grub2's search command.
When it finds the first ocurrence of a file it saves in a variable
the grub device where it has found it.
And it has gfxboot patched on it.
Well, it all depends on your needs.

Maybe you only needed the normal 0.97 grub. :)
