Details:

I'm currently using grub-2.00_p5107-r2 on Gentoo. I use a /boot/vmlinuz
symlink that points to my default kernel, as generated by "make -C
/usr/src/linux install". I'm currently using a custom GRUB config to use
this. It seems a common enough use case, though, to add support for it to
/etc/grub.d/10_linux or it's own script in /etc/grub.d/.

By having to create a custom config, I feel I'm loosing the benefit of all the
auto-detection implemented in /etc/grub.d/10_linux. So, basically I created
my custom config by running grub2-mkconfig and copying the generated menu item
but replacing the kernel path with that of the symlink.
