Could we considering adding Makefile.mak to the default filename permutations which are looked for?
rationale: I often see Makefiles which are called Makefile.mak, because that is the extension of other make(s) on different OSs. Also it is more convenient on Windows because then it can be associated with a text file editor, when there is no extension it's necessary to manually open it.
