you might be able to do this with a hidden field that gets updated with the id. You would probably need to alter the autocomplete code, you would probably be best served asking on the rails spin off lists (rubyonrails-spinoffs@googlegroups.com) is the address it is a googlegroups so you could look there in the archives. my guess is that you are going to need to do some custom work...
