Greetings. This is the Syracuse Area Rare Bird Alert for the week of 
March 24, 2014
 
Highlights:

Montezuma National Wildlife Refuge (MNWR) and Montezuma Wetlands Complex (MWC)
------------
     3/26: 2 SHORT-EARED OWLS and 2 SANDHILL CRANES were seen in the mucklands 
along Rt. 31.
     3/27: A SANDHILL CRANE was seen on Morgan Road. 2 SHCRs were seen on East 
Road. 
     3/28: 2 SANDHILL CRANES were seen on Morgan Road.
     3/29: A LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULL was seen near the end of the Wildlife 
Drive.
     3/31: An EURASIAN WIGEON was seen at the Visitor’s Center.


Derby Hill
------------

     Cold weather made for another slow week at Derby although there were 749 
birds counted on 3/25. In all 1,453 raptors were tallied. Still mostly Turkey 
Vultures and Red-tailed Hawks. Non raptor highlight was at least one ROSS’S 
GOOSE on 3/29.


Oswego County
------------

     3/27: A SURF-SCOTER was seen among the waterfowl on Oneida Lake at 
Brewerton.


Oneida County
------------

     3/24: AN SNOW OWL was seen near Waterville. Another was seen at Oriskiny
     3/28: A pair of PEREGRINE FALCONS continue possible nesting activities in 
downtown Utica.


Onondaga County
------------

     3/24: GREAT HORNED and BARRED OWLS are being heard and seen at Three 
Rivers WMA. As nesting season is upon us, except for Snowy Owls I will not 
report any more Owl sightings. If you think you see an Owl on a nest I 
recommend not reporting it. If you report to ebird you can hide your sighting.
     3/26: A SNOWY OWL was seen in the median along Rt.81 near Tully. 3 SNOWY 
OWLS were seen at Hancock Airport in Syracuse. A possible MEW GULL was spotted 
at the Inner Harbor on Kirkpatrick Street in Syracuse.
     3/27: An ICELAND GULL and 2 RED-NECKED GREBES were seen at the Inner 
Harbor.
     3/28: An astonishing 38 BALD EAGLES were seen on Cross Lake from Farnham 
Road.


Herkimer County
------------

     3/24: 
a SNOWY OWL was seen on Rt.170 north of Middleville. 5 SNOWIES were reported 
nearby on Rt.29.
     3/30: A CACKLING GOOSE was seen near the Mohawk River from Dyke Road east 
of Utica. A SNOWY OWL was seen on Cole Road north of Little Falls.


Madison County
------------

     3/26: 2 ICELAND GULS were seen at the turf farm north of Chittenango on 
Lakeport Road.


Jefferson County
------------

     3/26: A SNOW OWL was seen rear Rt.11 at Evans Mills.


Cortland County
------------

     3/30: A SNOWY OWL was seen along Rt.81 near Preble.
