This is the Syracuse Area Rare Bird Alert for the week of April 27, 2014 
Highlights:-----------
BLACK-CROWNED NIGHT HERONLEAST BITTERNEURASIAN WIGEONNORTHERN GOSHAWKSANDHILL

GROSBEAK

This past week saw the first big push of migrant passerines. Rather than list 
them individually I would ask that you look at the list of new arrivals at the 
end of this report. Most arrived in the last two days. If you have seen these 
birds in the past chances are they are back in traditional locations.

Montezuma National Wildlife Complex (MNWC) and Montezuma Wetlands Complex 
(MWC)------------
     4/28: 2 LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULLS were seen along the Wildlife Drive.     
4/30: A SANDHILL CRANE was seen near the Visitors Center. An EURASIAN WIGEON 
was seen at Knox-Marsellus Marsh. A BLACK-CROWNED NIGHT HERON was seen along 
Towpath Road.     5/3: A SANDHILL CRANE was seen along the Wildlife Drive.

Derby Hill------------
     Good flights of Broadwinged Hawks but smaller numbers of other raptors. 
3,322 birds were counted this week.

Oswego County------------
     4/28: 2 UPLAND SANDPIPERS were again seen at the Oswego County Arifield on 
Howard Road.     4/29: an adult LITTLE GULL and 2 GREAT EGRETS were seen at 
Phillips Point on Oneida Lake. All three SCOTERS were noted at this location 
during the week.     4/30: 2 EVENING GROSBEAKS continue at a feeder north of 
Cleveland.     5/3: A LEAST BITTERN was heard at the Rt. 6 wetlands north of 
Rt. 3.

Onondaga county------------
     5/2: A BLACK-CROWNED NIGHT-HERON was heard in Potter Marsh in Three Rivers 
WMA.     5/3: A LEAST BITTERN was heard in the same marsh.

Madison------------
     4/28: 5 EVENING GROSBEAKS and a NORTHERN GOSHAWK continue at a residence 
on Carpenter Road near Sheds.     4/30: A BLACK-CROWNED NIGHT-HERON was seen at 
Woodman Pond.     5/3: 2 male ORCHARD ORIOLED were seen on Ditchbank Road near 
Gee Road.

Oneida County------------
     4/29: A NORTHERN GOSHAWK was seen on Babcock Road south of Camden.
