The international PhD program of the Biozentrum, University of Basel, Switzerland, is open for applications until June, 20th.
We encourage highly motivated students looking for an opportunity to carry out excellent structural biology research to apply now to the Biozentrum PhD program. The Focal Area Structural Biology & Biophysics at Biozentrum provides a collaborative environment and state-of-the-art facilities for cryo electron microscopy, X-ray crystallography, NMR spectroscopy, and nanobiology. It includes the research teams of Jan Pieter Abrahams, Stephan Grzesiek, Sebastian Hiller, Roderick Lim, Timm Maier, Tilman Schirmer, Henning Stahlberg and Camilo Perez. Key research topics are membrane proteins, large macromolecular assemblies, signalling, host-pathogen interactions, neurodegeneration, chaperones, cellular mechanics and methods development. All teams are supported by core facilities for biophysical techniques, proteomics, advanced imaging, electron microscopy and quantitative genomics. Recent research highlights include Nature, doi: 10.1038/nature2234 (2017); Nature 531,598-603 (2016); Science 351, 48-52 (2016); Nature 531, 533-537(2016); Nature 530:237-41 (2016); Cell 160, 952-962 (2015); Nature 523:236-9 (2015). For more information about groups and facilities see http://www.biozentrum.unibas.ch<http://www.biozentrum.unibas.ch/>; for specific questions feel free to contact me informally (timm.ma...@unibas.ch)<mailto:timm.ma...@unibas.ch)>. Successful candidates in this competitive program will have the opportunity to do two lab rotations before selecting a host lab at the Biozentrum for their PhD. They are generously supported by a personal fellowship (starting annual salary approx. 47.000CHF, plus an extra allowance for study-related expenses). All PhD students at the Biozentrum are mentored by PhD advisory committees and benefit from an excellent postgraduate teaching program, including specialized courses, lectures and seminar series in structural biology. A PhD association organizes retreats, career development lectures and seminars as well as soft skills courses and social activities. The Biozentrum of the University of Basel is one of the leading institutes worldwide for molecular biology research and teaching. It is home to more than 30 research groups with scientists from over 40 countries. Research at the Biozentrum focuses on the areas of Growth & Development, Infection Biology, Neurobiology, Structural Biology & Biophysics and Computational & Systems Biology. With its more than 500 employees, the Biozentrum is the largest department at the University of Basel’s Faculty of Science. Basel is an international city with inhabitants from 150 nations. Located on the border where three countries meet – Switzerland, Germany & France -, it is one of Europe’s most important life sciences hubs. Basel provides a high standard of living and a rich and varied cultural atmosphere. The application procedure includes requests for letters of reference, so start your application as soon as possible.
