I can't tell you how many times I have run into nonsense errors like this when installing SQL 2000. In my eyes, although SQL 2000 has a good core engine, the install and the interface is very buggy and sensitive to system and software oddities. I wish I could tell give you specific advise, although I don't have any.. just wanted to let you know you are not alone.
