There's a difference between an interactive grid and a visual only table, particularly when you talk about the need for merged cells. Implementing merged cells in the DataGrid, while extremely useful, would be complex. However, if there was a table component which provided view only, merged cells are not such a big deal. We had to create a table component for one of our projects just for this reason, and required view only (not interactive).
