I'd guess it's an Oracle issue (or the driver), wherein there's a certain threshold where it's got to stop and think before it just... gets the column.
I've found, btw, that with SQL Server, having a long-text field affects a select against the entire table because it considers the entire row as it's selecting only 3 columns.
