yeah, that's what I origionally wanted to do. (we were banned from using SProcs and triggers... long story)

You will need to do record locking in the db. That should be no big deal. Encapsulate the locking and lock-checking routines into a CFC and build stored procs on the db server to do the checking and locking. Unless you have a huge number of rows to check against, a stored proc to get a row by ID should take no time at all.
