This might sound a little strange, but try writing some custom tags. Pass variables in and return them, get a good feel for the different "scopes" in ColdFusion, write some functions to do common routines. There's enough there to learn and ponder and once you are comfortable with all of that, write your own cfc(s) to replace the custom tags, and encapsulate the functions.

By that stage you may be ready to tackle a light framework.
