In Geek Heresy (buy the book<http://eepurl.us8.list-manage.com/track/click?u=67aa47e069318bcfe59336e0b&id=b09b1a84ff&e=2404255114>), Kentaro Toyama<http://eepurl.us8.list-manage2.com/track/click?u=67aa47e069318bcfe59336e0b&id=39890a37b0&e=2404255114>, former Microsoft computer scientist, draws on his years of experience in India and elsewhere to show that, despite its incredible power, technology fails to provide answers to the world’s social problems. According to Bill Gates, the book’s depth of research “reminds us that there are few one-size-fits-all solutions.” In conversation with Wier Harman, Town Hall’s Executive Director, Toyama will give examples in education, healthcare, and democracy to demonstrate that there is no social change without deep change in people. More about the event and to register on Town Hall's website<http://eepurl.us8.list-manage.com/track/click?u=67aa47e069318bcfe59336e0b&id=e1ca2cb9a2&e=2404255114> Wednesday, June 24th, 7pm Geek Heresy book discussion & signing with Kentaro Toyama University Bookstore In 2004, award-winning computer scientist Kentaro Toyama moved to India to explore technological solutions for the world's persistent social problems. However, after ten years of innovation, what he discovered was that technology—while theoretically helpful—could not drive social progress on its own. In his recently-released book, Toyama offers up his newfound perspective, contrasting the failed introduction of technology into social systems unaware of how to use it or disinclined to incorporate it into their lives as intended with individuals whose human efforts have made remarkable strides for social change. Joining us for a discussion and signing of his new book, Toyamo will further explore his argument for why, no matter how advanced our technology, human problems must first be met with human solutions.
