Save the date For the 11th Annual Rhythm Festival, known this year as the Rhythm
Gathering.
The 11th annual BIRDS Rhythm Gathering will be held on October 1, 2005, at
St. Johns Church.
It will start at 2:00pm with a drum circle jam outside of the church, and go through midnight. Part of the philosophy of a gathering rather than a festival is more of
an intimate feel, and also a true gathering of the Baltimore area community of
drummers to participate in the festival themselvesnot just attend. This
community is a unique drumming community: it is rich, diverse, and draws people
from many surrounding areas.
During the day, we have a Dunun drum workshop with Urban Foli, Jaqui is
back with Drum for Joy!, Zaipo will be rocking the house with his African dance
workshop, Ken Krampton will be working with the children for a kids workshop,
and more. Workshop prices will be available soon. All day long there will
be marketplace vendors (drums for sale!), a Kids Corner sponsored by Port
Discovery, beverages and food from Yabba Pot.
The evening will kick off at 6pm with all of you onstage, showcasing your
local stuff to the community, and then the evening performances start at 8:00.
We will be joined by Egyptian Sun Belly Dancers, and to top it off, Urban Foli
will end the evening performance night with a BLAST as we then move into the
community drum jam until midnight. Mama Kibibi Ajanku of Sankofa Center
for Cultural Enrichment will be enriching our stage again this year with her
presence as master of ceremonies during the open mic and performer portion of
the evening. Admission to this is $10 for the whole evening. Bargain!
If your group is interested in performing on stage during the open mic
portion 6:00pm-8:00pm (there are 12 minute time slots for performances) please
E-mail [EMAIL PROTECTED] with
your groups information/description/what you stand for, and cc Mark Cello at
mchello@ bellatlantic.net for your sound needs for your portion. We will
work out a schedule and mail it out to those interested.
How is the Rhythm Gathering different from and the same as the Rhythm
Festival?
1. There will not be a street festival with the street closing. The
gathering will happen on the lawn/parking area of the church during the day
and inside the church (workshops).
2. There will not be an outdoor stage during the day, but the drum circle
will take place all day outside on the lawn/parking area. There will be some
food vendors and a few marketplace vendors.
3. The evening concert will have 2 parts: a planned community open Mic
and scheduled performers. Would you like to be on stage? Please contact
us!
4. There will be the usual ROCKIN drum circle after the performance, the
usual until midnight!
