Jim. Yo on theright track. If in fact the block has been decked, The  Eng.
code stamping will be partially
or totally obliterated.  This is not to say if you staping are full depth
that it was not re-stamped ( unlikely)
 Also if you your heads are off, you can measure the piston  to block hight,
All you need is a GOOD straight edge and feeler gauges
You measure the distance between the flat Quench area of the piston and the
straight edge.( don't quote me on this)
but Ii think stock  BB  run at .030 -.040 deck hight ..
You can also know if you have a fully decked block when you install your
intake. the bolt are FULL to the bottom of the holes. !!
( bottom 0 meaning ifyou look in the intake bolt hole the head hole is not
Concentric but lowered ..
