Another solution for adjusting the valves while the motor's running is to cut through the top of an old valve cover, to give you access to the rocker bolts.  That's what I've been doing for the last couple of years, works great, and is super cheap.

Trickest thing I have seen, and I know they have been around for awhile, but they are these clips that go on the rockers...they stop the oil from shooting, and going everywhere. They were my Dad's friends, and he is the one that adjusted my valves....I tried to do it, with the valve covers off, and it was one of the worst experiences....oil on the headers....nasty stuff.
