Not linux specific, I can repro in Windows XP 3.0.190.4 (Official Build  
19293)

Chrome behavior matches IE and Safari, only Firefox doesn't create 2 PRE  
tags.  My
guess is that WebKit + IE follow the simple standard that hitting enter  
inside any
block should split the block.  It isn't clear to me what the correct  
behavior is, but
there will be an answer in the HTML 5 spec soon.
