Hi to everyone, specially for Chromium developers, the main purpose of this post is to discuss and get information about the localization system of chromium-browser.
Let me introduce myself: I am Fran Diéguez, member of Galician GNU / Linux Users Group [www.glug.es] (northwestern region of Spain). In this region the motion of Free Software has been growing for over 10 years, and we are a very active community regarding localization of Free Software. We heve the Galician language that is the co-official language alongside Spanish, also the society feels a special attachment to their own language. As I said we are a very active community with many projects translated: GNOME desktop, KDE desktop, oOo.org, the Mozilla suite ... among others. Having said that and focusing on the location of Chromium-browser, I've been inquiring about the process of locating it and I haven't found a lot... A blueprint about how to get localized the code at chromium http://dev.chromium.org/developers/design-documents/ui-localization And a discussion at google groups that leaves me a bit puzzled. http://groups.google.com/group/chromium-discuss/browse_thread/thread/5fb5bb2a505883f6/38b21380029b65b6?lnk=gst&q=translation#38b21380029b65b6 Here we can read a terrible sentence... "Generally, since the dev version is released in a very timely manner (every week or so), with unsure features, it is likely that not everything is translated by the time the dev release is released, though, you can probably expect the features that are more likely to stay, to get translated in a timely fashion (though, after the dev release) as well. So I would say, though without any reliable source or demonstration, that one or two weeks after the strings get introduced, they are translated. " Sincerelly, I don't think the translation in time of a project would impede to release, especially when chromium-browser is still in early development. In this respect and to defend my ideas we have a lot of free software using other localization technologies (gettext, properties...) which are process and formats incredibly tested. I think the developers of Chromium and Chrome should not refuse collaboration in the location of this magnificent browser, as they are losing a feature that other FLOSS browsers at this moment have more than covered. Finally offer me for the translation of Chromium browser to the Galician language, along with more people in my community, which is composed of volunteers and businesses of translation specialized in localization of FOSS. And if this is not posibble, please explain us the process to localize it and we will compile chromium translated into galician language for our own use.
