Er, I may have misinterpreted your problem. What are you trying to
ping, exactly? The IP assigned to the Virtual-Template interface, a
directly connected IP, or something 'beyond' the local router?

If the latter, sorry - I jumped the gun. As others have already
pointed out, it sounds like your provider doesn't advertise the /29
attached to your circuit.
