I think one thing to consider between Heroku and something like Slicehost, is what exactly you have the resources/willingness to support.
One of the things I've really liked is that to get an app running on Heroku is that I basically just have to worry about my Ruby app, not maintaining a server environment. On the other hand, it's somewhat limiting as to what I can do there, so it's not a solution to every problem. -Ross.
