This position is a non-tenure eligible appointment at the rank of Librarian
Faculty.

  
**POSITION DESCRIPTION:**  
Galter Health Sciences Library at Northwestern University's Feinberg School of
Medicine seeks a Digital Innovations Specialist to provide support for
faculty, students, and staff on matters pertaining to scholarly communication,
such as copyright and fair use, compliance with public access policy mandates,
and preservation and access to scholarly outputs through a digital repository
and other digital means. This position is expected to represent Galter library
on scholarly communications issues and also be a significant contributor to
greater campus-wide digital preservation activities. This position will serve
as a member of the leadership team at Galter Library.

  
**POSITION REPORTS TO:** Deputy Director  
  
**DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:**

  * Lead scholarly communications efforts at Galter Health Sciences Library. 
    * Has leadership, management, and planning responsibilities for the 
scholarly communication program at Galter Health Sciences Library. This 
includes implementation of an institutional repository for the Feinberg School 
of Medicine and development of initiatives that encourage and enable authors to 
understand and manage their own copyright, improve access to their published 
research, and be aware of alternate modes of dissemination of scholarly results.
    * Works with a wide range of campus stakeholders to develop and implement a 
program to increase awareness among faculty, researchers and students at 
Feinberg School of Medicine about scholarly communication issues in the digital 
environment.
    * Keeps abreast of current issues in scholarly publishing and 
dissemination, including trends, legislation, and changes in scholarly 
publishing and communication which affect access and preservation of scholarly 
information.
    * Provides support for issues related to compliance with public access 
policy to individuals and groups.
    * Develops print and electronic support materials on topics related to 
scholarly communications; plans and organizes regular campus events and 
programming on these topics.
    * Selects resources (electronic resources, journals, and software tools) to 
support this area of effort.
    * Works with faculty and students to develop ideas for new programs and 
services and a deeper understanding of service needs.
  * Contributes to library-wide planning activities and collaborates with 
colleagues on projects in areas of shared interest. Actively participates in 
appropriate library programs and services where appropriate.
  * Manages projects to effectively and efficiently provide services. Seeks 
grant opportunities to fund innovation efforts.
  * Attends faculty and student research seminars, department wide conference 
and university symposia to keep abreast of current research. Serves on 
University and Library committees as appropriate.
  * Participates in scholarly societies, attends academic conferences, and 
represents the Library in relevant academic activities.
  * Serves on the library's management team.
**REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS AND COMPETENCIES:**

  * Master's degree in library or information science from an ALA-accredited 
program or international equivalent, or other appropriate degree or equivalent 
experience.
  * Strong ability to think and act strategically, and demonstrated success at 
bringing concepts
 to realization while meeting deadlines.
  * Demonstrated ability to work independently and collaboratively with a 
diverse population of faculty/staff, students, and colleagues.
  * Command of scholarly communications topics, including copyright and fair 
use, public access policies, author rights, models of publication and 
dissemination, and digital preservation.
  * Demonstrated experience with commercial or open source institutional 
repository platform(s).
  * Demonstrated experience with digital collections and exhibits.
  * Demonstrated ability to learn new technology tools/skills.
  * Evidence of professional initiative and problem-solving skills .
  * Excellent analytical, interpersonal, time management, organizational and 
problem-solving skills.
  * Excellent written and oral communication skills; demonstrated ability to 
communicate effectively both in person and virtually using a variety of media 
and technologies.
**PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS AND COMPETENCIES:**

  * Successful leadership of institutional repository launch.
  * Project or team leadership responsibilities.
  * Demonstrated awareness and understanding of metadata standards.
  * Demonstrated experience with data mining.
  * Entrepreneurial spirit.
  * Demonstrated experience providing instructional and reference services 
includingcreation of online tutorials, surveys, or guides.
  * Demonstrated ability to work creatively, independently, and collaboratively.
  * Demonstrated experience with Semantic Web languages and technologies.
