"The DAS (the secret service), with help from the national police, discovered a plan by the autodefence groups (the paramilitaries) operating in the Magdalena Medio region to target the president of the republic," Jaramillo told a news conference. He said the groups had intended to assassinate Pastrana in Bogota, or in the coffee-growing region in the centre-west of the country when the president visited there on August 8.
