Subject: [Community_garden] Sustaining a community garden

Hello Suzy,

Benny is correct in developing a relationship with the local media and using
them to advertise. The media was a big supporter when we started two years
ago. I still remember Charlie talking about growing cucumbers as big as his
arm.

You may also want to create a Facebook page for the garden and notify your
friends and have them do the same. Have you listed the garden on the ACGA
site?

Finally, not knowing the particulars or the history of your garden, you may
want to take a look at your policies and rules. Do any of the rules
discourage gardening? I noticed your requirement for a 2-3 hour commitment
per week. Is that a barrier, and if so, can it be changed to make gardening
seem more doable? For example, we have one workday a month. It lasts
anywhere from 2-4 hours depending on the task. We work common areas. Folks
also use the workday to take care of their own plots, but they do it either
before or after the time for the workday. Tasks on workdays are well defined
and tools available so they can be completed. Our gardeners do not have to
make every workday. As it turns out, the workday is often a time to
socialize, so there is usually a good turnout. Some folks bring coffee and
there is usually the sharing of produce. Making the workday a social event
creates community. People are working together.

You are also very ambitious to develop a garden with 30 plots. Six families
is good!
