I've been following this with interest. I wonder if some of the ACGA
workshop and materials on community building would be helpful, in the
context of building community and valuing the diversity of a community and
the importance of setting garden practices that are supportive of the
various community residents.

Gardeners might be more likely to attend a broadly-themed workshop on
building community, and get some of the same benefits as one focused
specifically on race and culture

I also wanted to comment that a friend told me an insightful story about
feeling unwelcome in a community garden because of cultural differences.
First, she brought rice and beans with chicken to a potluck before
realizing that the group was mostly vegan/vegetarian and felt some icy
reactions. She laughed it off as the nature of potluck.... But then, even
more significantly, mandatory garden meetings were being held on Sunday
mornings, which was impossible for her because of Sunday morning church
services. She mentioned some tension around whether she spent enough time
in the garden too, and that she eventually gave up her spot in the
garden. She's very savvy about the shifting demographics of her
neighborhood and told me the story with amazement at the irony of the
situation -- ironic that a group of community-minded gardeners so totally
missed the chance to be inclusive toward her as a long-time neighborhood
resident.
