We stopped using boards made out of regular wood to replace rotted wood in our community garden plots. We are now using boards made out of Trex. Trex is a composite material that is commonly used to build decks. The Trex is about 10 times more expensive than regular wood but will last you 10 times longer; we're talking about a shelf life of about 30 years. We believe it is well worth the investment.

We are a community garden in the North end of Chicago. Our meeting area, a wooden deck with three built-in raised beds, is full of rats and rotten wood. It has to be replaced. We are doing fundraising and planning now, and we are looking at design ideas. Ideally we will be able to use this space for classes and relaxation. The new deck will be built in a shaded area, so the raised beds aren't so important any longer. The area is about 40 feet by 16 feet. I'd love to see pictures and ideas from other gardens... what worked for you, what do you wish you had, what would you do differently? Many thanks! -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed...
