Will the games be played on KGS using network connections from the contest site, or will you provide a referee program? If the games are played on KGS, why do people have to drag their computers to Portland?


We will use KGS. There are three reasons for having competitors present in person:

1) As an anti-cheating measure. Since there is money at stake, we don't want to make it trivial for a strong human player to masquerade as a program.

2) As a sort of scientific conference, giving Go programmers an opportunity to network in a way that is not possible over email.

3) To create an event on which the media can report.
