It seams like it is "general" knowledge that you have to add your own hostname to the /etc/hosts after installation to make KDE happy. It takes long times (e.g. 5 seconds) to open any window in kde if hostname is missing. If added they will open immediatly. I changed my /etc/hosts right after installation from: 127.0.0.1 localhost to 127.0.0.1 localhost myfriend (My hostname is myfriend) I do not know if this is good, but my KDE is much faster when opening windows and everything seams to still work. This is true on all my three computers (Compaq laptop, Dell Workstation and an old server). For some reason KDE starts searching for this hostname on the DNS every time a window is opened..... Could Mandrake installation configure something similair automatically. If a fixed IP number is choosen, this entry is easy to perform. It may be more difficult when using DHCP, that most people use, since you need to add it on the local interface.
